Laney makes history with double win over CCSF

Wonder of wonders, miracles of miracles. The Laney College football team has defeated City College of San Francisco twice in one season for the first time ever. The Eagles (9-2) finished their best season since 2007 when they defeated the Rams 49-35 on Dec. 3 in the San Francisco Community College Bowl at CCSF. Laney had previously defeated CCSF 18-13 on Sept. 2 in the season opener in Oakland. “I think the emphasis of the season is that we started strong and ended strong,” head coach John Beam said. “They played with tremendous enthusiasm and never quit. “We won two […]

My experience at ‘The NFL Experience’

Tower staffer was among 30-40 Laney students working at Super Bowl 50 This spring I was recruited by a temporary staffing agency to work at the NFL Experience held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The NFL experience is an interactive amusement event for football fans. I was recruited at Laney College along with a total of 800 others recruited by this particular staffing agency. The event is scheduled for seven days, including Super Bowl Sunday. The recruiter said that the ideal situation was to have two staffers for every one fan. I am grateful for the opportunity to […]

Brady to CJ: ‘Keep climbing to be great’

February 4, 2016 1:43 PM

Editor’s Note: New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Denver running back C.J. Anderson shared a moment after Anderson’s Broncos defeated Brady’s Patriots, 20-18, in the AFC Championship on Jan. 17. Anderson posted this on Instagram and it went viral. “cjandersonrb9: I know a lot of people hate this man but man when he was pick 199 and was over look he inspired me I was undrafted and over came all the odds so bless what he told me at the end of this game. He said “C.J. way to fight and prove everybody wrong you belong in this league […]

No bowl for Laney this season

No bowl for Laney this season

Eagles get waxed by rival Chabot College in final game Ugh. That describes the effort and result in Laney College’s season-ending 48-21 defeat at the hands of rival Chabot College on Nov. 13 in Oakland. The Eagles finished the season with a 4-6 overall record and were 1-4 in the National Valley Conference. Laney had a slight chance to get a bowl bid with a 5-5 mark (indeed, two bowl teams did have that record) but the loss to the Gladiators (8-2, 5-0) put the kibosh on that thought. The team had gone to three consecutive postseason games. The defeat […]

Still hope for bowl bid

Still hope for bowl bid

Eagles must defeat Chabot to go There is no getting around it—for the Laney College football team to receive a postseason bowl bid it must defeat Chabot College on Friday, Nov. 13. One advantage for the Eagles—the game is at home. Game time is 7 p.m. But after a satisfying 38-17 home victory over the College of Sequoias on Oct. 30, Laney dropped an unsatisfying 26-21 game to San Joaquin Delta in Stockton on Nov. 7. The loss to the Mustangs dropped the Eagles record to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the National Valley Conference. Teams have been picked for […]

Time for Eagles to get back on track

After two losses, Laney plays Sequoias on Oct. 30 The Laney College football team, after suffering three straight losses, will attempt to get back on the winning track when it plays host to the College of Sequoias on Friday, Oct. 30. Game time is 7 p.m. Laney (3-4, 0-2 in the National Valley Conference) has seen its conference title aspirations just about disappear with its last two losses—35-16 at Fresno City College on Oct. 17 and 41-20 at home to Modesto Junior College on Oct. 23. The Eagles should have an easier time with COS (4-3, 0-2). The Giants began […]

This time, turnovers doom Laney

This time, turnovers doom Laney

Eagles play at Fresno City after 24-14 loss to De Anza Two weeks ago, the Laney College football team was riding high with a 3-1 record, fueled in part by a plus-12 turnover margin—10 interceptions, nine fumble recoveries vs. seven miscues (they’ve made). Well, that didn’t last long. The Eagles made three turnovers, De Anza College had none and it resulted in a rather lackluster 24-14 loss to the (aforementioned) Dons in Cupertino on Oct. 3. The loss drops Laney’s record to 3-2 as the Eagles head to Fresno for a 6 p.m. game against the up-and-down Fresno City College […]

Turnovers sparking Laney wins

Turnovers sparking Laney wins

10 interceptions, nine fumble recoveries lead to a 3-1 record Eagles to play De Anza Oct. 3 before bye week Interceptions. Fumble recoveries. Teams can live (and die) when it comes to turnovers. One of the signature signposts of a team’s success (or failure) is the number of turnovers it generates versus the number it yields. Right now, the Laney College football team is riding high on turnovers. They have 10 interceptions and nine fumble recoveries. Conversely, the Eagles have only committed seven miscues. That’s a turnover margin of plus-12 (19 minus 7) and it is always an advantage to […]

College of San Mateo sacks Laney in bowl game

College of San Mateo sacks Laney in bowl game

The Laney College football season ended with a thud in a 30-20 loss to host College of San Mateo in the Bothman Bulldog Bowl on Nov. 22. Actually, it was more like a sack than a thud. Eagles quarterbacks Kurt Palandech and Garrett Anderson were harassed unmercifully, getting sacked 10 times for a loss of 67 yards. The lost yards, unlike the NFL, are subtracted from a team’s rushing total, so the Eagles finished with a minus-45 yards rushing and 121 yards of total offense. But with all that went wrong for Laney (6-5), the Eagles were still only down […]

A last-minute loss at Chabot

Eagles to play College of San Mateo on Nov. 22 Time ran out on the Laney College football team on Nov. 15 against rival Chabot College in Hayward. The Eagles lost 37-33 on a last-minute touchdown pass, but are still going to play in a bowl game at College of San Mateo on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. It will be the third straight bowl game for Laney under third-year head coach John Beam. The Eagles lost to Diablo Valley College in the East Bay Bowl in Pleasant Hill, but defeated the Vikings last season in a bowl victory […]
