Brown voted BVC MVP, first team all-state

Laney College sophomore guard Courtney Brown (pictured) was selected as the Bay Valley Conference MVP and to the first team of the California Community College all-state squad. Brown led the Eagles to a 17-11 overall record and a second-place finish in the BVC (11-3). Brown had an 18.0 scoring average for the season and scored 19 points in a 73-53 NorCal playoff loss at City College of San Francisco on Feb. 24.

Dropped programs in Bay Valley Conference hurt chances For the first time in seven years, the Laney College women’s basketball team was not selected to participate in the Northern California Regional. The Eagles finished the season with a 15-10 record and lost 71-63 at home to Bay Valley Conference champion Contra Costa College on Feb. 19. If Laney had won that game, it would have been BVC champion and automatically qualified for NorCal. Eagles knock off Solano, host Comets Friday night in BVC finale It all comes down to this week in women’s basketball. In a topsy-turvy season that has been the Bay Valley Conference, the Laney College team has a chance win the BVC title with two victories over its nearest competitors. The Eagles (10-1, 15-9) are tied with Contra Costa College (10-1, 20-9) for the BVC lead. Laney defeated host Solano 47-29 on Feb. 17, knocking the Falcons (8-3, 13-14) out of the race. Jamika Wilson sored 23 points to lead the Laney College women’s basketball team to a 69-65 overtime victory over Chabot College in the quarterfinals of the Contra Costa Classic on Dec. 4. In the first round on Dec. 3, Maddie Mills scored 18 points as the Eagles (3-4) defeated Cosumnes River College 51-44. Laney hosted these two games. The two victories meant that the Eagles would play Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 in the final two games of the tournament at Contra Costa College and those didn’t turn out so well. NCAA mandates four 10-minute quarters, other changes The NCAA approved changes in game rules to women’s basketball this past June. The change in rules included implementing a four-quarter format, as opposed to 20-minute halves. In the new format, there will be five time fouls per quarter that will reset on a per- quarter basis. Other changes include the option to advance the ball in the final minute of a game. Not long after the rule change, the Community College Coaches Athletic Association (CCCAA), which governs women’s basketball in California, adopted the same rules for the upcoming season. Second time in three years Thunderbirds make Final Four The Merritt College men’s basketball team saw another fine season come up short once again when the Thunderbirds lost 94-83 to East Los Angeles College in a California Community College Athletic Association State Final Four semifinal game at Cerritos College in Norwalk on March 13. DJ Kennedy scored 20 points to lead Merritt (25-7). Travon King added 19 points and Jovantae Carlton and Denzel Bellot each had 14. King also had 11 rebounds. Laney defeats Solano in overtime The Laney College women’s basketball team remained tied for the top spot in the Bay Valley Conference with a 69-43 victory over visiting Yuba College on Jan. 28. The Eagles are 8-2 in the BVC and 14-8 overall after defeating the 49ers. At press time, they are tied with Solano and Merritt College for first place in conference play. Robnesha Brigham led the way against the 49ers with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Luisa Delos Reyes added 15 points.
