She remains at Laney, working in the Kinesiology Department. Laney College sophomore basketball player Chermayne Moore is Utah-bound. Moore, a 5-foot-8 sophomore guard, signed a letter-of-intent recently to attend Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. “Chermayne started playing for me when she was in the eighth grade,” Laney coach Ron Williams said. “She was a very good defensive player and always worked really hard. “Last year she really added the offensive piece (of her game) and this year she really turned it on.” Moore was never better offensively when she scored 35 points, including seven 3-pointers, in a 104-58 victory over Yuba College on Feb. 5. Merritt soccer team wins first BVC title

The Merritt College Thunderbirds men’s soccer team eclipsed its best finish to date with a resounding 4-0 drubbing of the Yuba College 49ers on Nov. 1. The route all but cemented the T-Birds’ position atop the Bay Valley Conference (BVC) standings. The win brought Coach Zach Sullivan’s side’s record to 12-3-3 (wins-losses-draws) overall for the season, one better than Merritt’s previous best record of 10-7-3 set in 2010. The T-Birds’ victory over the 49ers all but cemented the first BVC title in school history. BVC rival Contra Costa College could have drawn level on points should the Comets have won […]

Alameda volleyball in first place

Thompson credits recruiting for Cougars’ success If there is one reason for the unprecedented success of the women’s volleyball team at the College of Alameda, it comes down to one word: Recruiting. The Cougars are currently atop the Bay Valley Conference standings with an 11-0 record and 17-4 mark overall. It is the best record of any Peralta women’s volleyball team ever. “It comes down to recruiting,” said head coach Linda Thompson, who is in her 10th year as head coach at COA.  “We started to make a real effort about three years ago to bring some players here and […]

The Beautiful Game turns ugly in the Qatari deserts

October 24, 2013 4:36 PM

I’ve never really trusted anything labeled “supreme” (unless immediately followed by the word “pizza”), and the “Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee” is no exception. Charged with oversight and coordination of Qatar’s ongoing World Cup project, the committee is ultimately responsible for what The Guardian newspaper has recently called “slave labor” working conditions. In reports revealed by several of the paper’s correspondents, a host of labor violations has been unearthed, not least of which is the death of at least 44 migrant workers toiling in forced labor conditions. The workers, primarily from Nepal, are recruited by less than reputable agencies and then […]
