In previous issues of the Laney Tower, our staff has photographed and documented the various maintenance and infrastructural issues that Laney College has faced. We did this in each issue, briefly but consistently, in a feature called “Tower Watch.” Last year, we decided to retire the feature, giving the space over to stories and photographs about other issues across the district and the Bay Area at large. What kind of school should Laney College be? In 1953, a humble high school campus in the heart of the East Bay became the site of Oakland City College—soon to be known as Laney College. Brown voted BVC MVP, first team all-state

Laney College sophomore guard Courtney Brown (pictured) was selected as the Bay Valley Conference MVP and to the first team of the California Community College all-state squad. Brown led the Eagles to a 17-11 overall record and a second-place finish in the BVC (11-3). Brown had an 18.0 scoring average for the season and scored 19 points in a 73-53 NorCal playoff loss at City College of San Francisco on Feb. 24.

A Tower article on the Merritt College Tobacco-less Club (“Merritt Tobacco-less Club wins $20K national grant,” Nov. 23) failed to identify Pauline Bondonno, executive director of Community Health Education Institute, as the person in charge of putting the grant money into effect over the next 12 months. Bondonno has headed tobacco prevention programs at Merritt College for the past two years, through grants from the California Department of Health and, previously, through the Alameda County Health Services Tobacco Prevention Program.
