Laney defeats Solano in overtime The Laney College women’s basketball team remained tied for the top spot in the Bay Valley Conference with a 69-43 victory over visiting Yuba College on Jan. 28. The Eagles are 8-2 in the BVC and 14-8 overall after defeating the 49ers. At press time, they are tied with Solano and Merritt College for first place in conference play. Robnesha Brigham led the way against the 49ers with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Luisa Delos Reyes added 15 points. College of San Mateo sacks Laney in bowl game

The Laney College football season ended with a thud in a 30-20 loss to host College of San Mateo in the Bothman Bulldog Bowl on Nov. 22. Actually, it was more like a sack than a thud. Eagles quarterbacks Kurt Palandech and Garrett Anderson were harassed unmercifully, getting sacked 10 times for a loss of 67 yards. The lost yards, unlike the NFL, are subtracted from a team’s rushing total, so the Eagles finished with a minus-45 yards rushing and 121 yards of total offense. Laney plays Modesto JC at home to open Contra Costa Tournament

The Laney College women’s basketball team, fresh off of playing two tournaments in Southern California, will play its first home game of the season when the Eagles play host to Modesto Junior College on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. The game is part of the 16-team Comet Classic, which is usually held at Contra Costa College. This year, the first two rounds will be held at Contra Costa, Laney and Merritt colleges. Two first-round games will be played at Laney. Eagles to play College of San Mateo on Nov. 22 Time ran out on the Laney College football team on Nov. 15 against rival Chabot College in Hayward. The Eagles lost 37-33 on a last-minute touchdown pass, but are still going to play in a bowl game at College of San Mateo on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. It will be the third straight bowl game for Laney under third-year head coach John Beam. Football Team has won four straight games The Laney College football team is riding a four-game wining streak and leads the National Valley Conference with a 3-0 record with two games remaining. But nothing has been decided yet. The Eagles entertain the San Joaquin Delta Mustangs from Stockton on Friday, Nov. 7, in their final home game of the season. Running back Keith Anthony ran for three touchdowns and quarterback Kurt Palandech ran for two scores and threw for one as the host Eagles (3-3 overall) won their Valley Conference opener on Oct. 17.
Anthony opened the scoring with a 6-yard run in the first quarter and after the Rams (3-3, 0-1) tied the game at 7, Laney scored 28 points in the second quarter to take a 35-7 lead. Three qualify for state track meet

The Laney College women’s track and field team, qualified three athletes for the California Community Colleges State Track and Field Championships. The championship meet will be held Friday-Saturday, May 16-17, at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Kortni Smyers-Jones qualified in the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Jasiri Blake and Inanna Felicity also qualified.

Laney College sophomore basketball player Chermayne Moore is Utah-bound. Moore, a 5-foot-8 sophomore guard, signed a letter-of-intent recently to attend Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. “Chermayne started playing for me when she was in the eighth grade,” Laney coach Ron Williams said. “She was a very good defensive player and always worked really hard. “Last year she really added the offensive piece (of her game) and this year she really turned it on.” Moore was never better offensively when she scored 35 points, including seven 3-pointers, in a 104-58 victory over Yuba College on Feb. 5.
