WHO ARE WE?

What kind of school should Laney College be?

In 1953, a humble high school campus in the heart of the East Bay became the site of Oakland City College—soon to be known as Laney College.
Since then, Laney’s students have diligently reported on their school and community. Their news stories document the fundamental changes we’ve gone through over the years.
Examine our cover and you’ll see a collage of these stories. Put them beside the stories in this issue, and you’ll see how the decisions Laney’s students, faculty, and its administration make define our school.
This country faces a pivotal moment in its history: will it learn from its past, or will it run recklessly into a dark future?
Laney is no different. We must take cues from what has come before us if we are to create a school that its future students can look back on with pride.

The kind of school that stifles students’ free speech?
The kind of school that keeps its students safe?
The kind of school that listens to its faculty?
