A message from Laney college’s former president

March 17, 2016 1:56 PM

(Correction: In our March 3 issue we misreported Elñora Webb’s position change within the Peralta District. Webb did not resign or step down; she received a promotion within the district.)
Laney College is an exceptional institution. Working closely with students and student leaders has made my experiences working and serving at Laney an absolute joy.
I’ve learned much from you as we have worked together to better understand what students need to succeed. Allow me to offer all of you a heartfelt thank you!
I have been fortunate to be recruited to pursue professional advancement opportunities within and outside of our remarkable district.
LaneyWhile I am open to continued growth that would come from such opportunities, my commitment to Laney College after over thirteen years of service remains unwavering.
Thus, it is an honor to be able to share that I have accepted a promotional opportunity to work more closely with our Chancellor, Dr. Jowel Laguerre, at the district level, in order to support all of the colleges in our district.
As part of this transition, the Chancellor has identified an interim president and is securing other administrators to ensure the continued progress of Laney College. He recognizes that we have advanced significantly over the last ten years.
He understands that Laney is committed to ensuring significant improvements in the areas of student equity and student success. The college has strengthened its partnerships and is determining how to scale effective practices, always seeking to improve the capacity of the college.
The Chancellor knows the college requires the support that he has promised to provide, including addressing infrastructure requirements–especially with regard to technology and facilities.
This week, the Chancellor will introduce our new interim college president, and next week both the new interim college president and I will assume our new responsibilities.
Given the importance of continuity in college leadership, I will provide transitional support to the interim president.
I remain extremely excited to attend our graduation ceremony in May and share in all your success stories. I’m certain that it and our student honor’s banquet will be beautiful!
I would like to once again express my gratitude. You’ve all inspired me with your tenacity, your hard work, and your commitment to transforming your own lives through education.
I am extremely proud to have been a part of this remarkable community here at Laney for so long, and look forward to staying close by as I continue to serve the incredible city of Oakland and the greater East Bay.

Dr. Elñora Webb
